For anyone who loves an adventure, but prefers to “go their own way”, one of my favorite adventures on Island is the backside of Hana/Haleakala. The most common route to Hana is to take Hwy 360 over the North side of the island, but if you start early enough (I recommend around 8 am), taking Hwy 31 on the South side lends itself to a completely different (more vast and untamed) experience. It’s not uncommon to find beaches without a soul on them, or to stand on cliffs you could argue no one had stood before... but note: MAKE SURE you don’t find yourself in the dark on this side of the island. The roads are less cared for, and sometimes there are more cows on them than cars. I recommend starting on the South and working your way to Hana, and taking Hwy 360 back. Be sure to stop at the 7 sacred pools in Hana, and to hike up (2 miles) to the top waterfall! Be safe and have the time of your life!
